Day 103: High School Graduation (RW 1.3, RL 3.2)

Objective: ASWBAT determine the meaning of unknown words using context. ASWBAT identify the main plot of "High School Graduation."


Hard work pays off. English is hard work. You can do it! I will not give up on you.


Announcements:
  • Remember that it's your job to ask questions if you don't understand something.
  • Skills Assessment #8 / Common Assessment #2 is Friday, February 17, 2012.
  • Vocabulary competition winners for Q2 are CSUF and Berkeley! Congratulations! The new competition will begin today.

1. Check to see your score on yesterday's Daily Assessment. Plan on how you will improve your score today!

2. Double check your plot diagram with Mr. Herrera's example to ensure you have the correct parts we discussed yesterday. Add or change your plot diagram as needed.

3. Track Mr. Herrera as he explains how to analyze "High School Graduation" by Maya Angelou.

4. With your reading teammates, reread "High School Graduation" and answer the questions on the Socratic seminar prep sheet.

5. Take a look at the results for the RC 2.6 Quiz. Grade your own quiz using the answers and then fill out a Metacognitive Analysis of RC 2.6 Quiz. If you scored 100%, indicate that on the form. Submit your share link here.

6. Complete an illustrated vocabulary for the Word Bank terms by using context clues.

Early Finishers Tasks:
  • Read about Maya Angelou.
  • Label books in the class library using the Easy Labeling Directions! We NEED our library to be labeled completely! Please help!
  • If you haven't already done so, make 2 Book Recommendations for the KIPP LA Prep Library using Scholastic Book Search and AR Book Find. Remember to choose 2 books that are interesting and on your level.
  • Check to make sure ALL tests, quizzes, Socratic Seminars, and CFQ's are inside your portfolio.
  • Update your table of contents in your Brain. Paste any missing pages into your Brain.
  • Find another piece of exemplary work dated after January 23rd and give it to Mr. Herrera to post onto the Student Work Wall.
  • Use the Parent Letter for SA #7 and update the Class Tracker using stickers. Then place SA #7 into your portfolio.
  • Enjoy some silent reading time to catch up on a great book! Remember, daily reading will help you build those reading muscles!


Options for Academic Free Time:
1. Check out the class website for things to do if you are finished early!


Homework:
  1. Personal Reading (20 minutes)
  2. Complete the AR Book Response (must be neat and organized to receive credit)
  3. Finish anything you did not finish in class today
