Day 90: State of the Union (Day 2)

Objective: ASWBAT use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. ASWBAT analyze the internal consistency of text.


Hard work pays off. English is hard work. You can do it! I will not give up on you.


Announcements:
  • Remember that it's your job to ask questions if you don't understand something.
  • Skills Assessment #7 is Friday, February 03, 2012.

1. How do you personally communicate with others in your community? Complete the Personal Communication Profile survey.

2. What do you believe about intelligence? Complete the Intelligence Survey.

3. State of the Union Address (Click on this link to find the full speech):

  • Review unity, logic, and coherence. These three factors create internal consistency.
  • Read paragraphs 1-7 carefully. Then scroll down to the end of the speech and read the last 4 paragraphs carefully. Do not count the "Thank You" at the end as one paragraph. 
  • Then answer the following questions on page 110 of your Brain:
  1. Does the speech have unity?
  2. Does the speech have coherence?
  3. Does the speech have logic?
  4. Does the speech exhibit internal consistency? Why or why not?
  5. Use context clues to determine the meaning of the following words:
    • momentum
    • optimism
    • restore
