Hard work pays off. English is hard work. You can do it! I will not give up on you.

Announcements:
  • Remember that it's your job to ask questions if you don't understand something.
  • Skills Assessment #7 is Friday, February 03, 2012.

1. Review the notes on Unity, Coherence, and Logic.

2. Finish the Say, Mean, Matter on page 110 of your Brain. We will review this on Tuesday. If you don't finish in class, you must finish for homework.

3. Complete the Criteria for Success for your rough draft of the I Have a Dream speech or The Gettysburg Address. If you scored a Not Yet (NY) in any area, you will need to fix your essay so that it meets the criteria. You can either fix it in your notebook or rewrite it onto a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to underline and number every criteria within your draft. Mr. Herrera will check this on Tuesday.

4. Read Barack Obama's speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention (DNC). This is an amazing, inspirational speech that put Obama on the political map, so to speak. In other words, no one really knew who he was until he gave that speech. He became famous after delivering this speech. As you read, do the following:

  • Highlight or underline important words, phrases, or statements that you think relate to his main idea.
  • Write a summary in the margin every 2-3 paragraphs. Your summary should be written neatly and clearly.
5. Prepare for a Socratic Seminar on Tuesday by filling out the Socratic Seminar Preparation Sheet on Obama's 2004 DNC speech.
