Day 74: Brief History of the English Language

Objective: ASWBAT identify some common Latin root words and prefixes and analyze these to determine their influence on the English language.


Hard work pays off. English is hard work. You can do it!


Announcements:
  • Remember that it's your job to ask questions if you don't understand something.
  • Skills Assessment #5 is this Thursday, December 15, 2011 and it will be your opportunity to continue to master or make up the following standards: RW 1.2RC 2.2RC 2.3RC 2.4, and RL 3.2. If the standard you have not mastered is not on this list, talk to Mr. Herrera about how to make it up outside of regular class time.

1. Complete the Do Now on page 91 of your Brain.

2. Track Mr. Herrera as he explains A Brief History of the English Language. Take Cornell notes on page 91 of your Brain.

3. Copy Latin Roots and Prefixes Analysis on page 92 of your Brain. Then, with your small group, work collaboratively to find all words that have Latin root words and prefixes in the Time Magazine article Pearl Harbor Remembered, filling up column 1 only. Use the Common Latin Roots and Prefixes as a resource.

4. Individually, finish the Latin Roots and Prefixes Analysis on page 92 of your Brain.

5. Quickwrite: Where does the English language come from? Has the English language changed over the years? Why or why not? Where do we see the influence of Latin in English?


Options for Academic Free Time:
1. Check out the class website for things to do if you are finished early!


Homework:
  1. Create a funny short story using English words with Latin roots and prefixes. Then complete a short vocabulary analysis.
  2. Personal reading for 15 minutes -- Be sure to update your reading log.
