Day 59: Character Motivations, Literary Devices, and Irony (Day 2)

Objective: ASWBAT identify and analyze character motivations, literary devices, and irony in The House on Mango Street.

  • Skills Assessment #3 is this Friday, November 18, 2011. We will have short days Tuesday-Friday of this week due to parent conferences. If you received a Basic or below on SA #2, I will be seeing you this week for some extra tutoring. If you received Proficient or above, continue to work hard to maintain your status.
  • Remember that it's your job to ask questions if you don't understand something.


1. Paste your Reading Log onto page 62 of your Brain.

2. Track Mr. Herrera as he explains Irony. Take notes on page 63 of your Brain.

3. Track Mr. Herrera as he explains how to complete Character Motivations, Literary Devices, and Irony. Then work with your small group to finish the activity. If you finish early, move on to early finisher's tasks on the class website below.


Options for Academic Free Time:
1. Check out the class website for things to do if you are finished early!


Homework:
  1. Write a vignette or a scene related to where you live on page 64 of your Brain. Your vignette should (a) focus on the place where you live, (b) describe the scene in detail, and (c) be between half to a full page in length. Use the House on Mango Street vignette on page 3 of the book to help you if you need ideas.
  2. Read p. 14-25 of The House on Mango Street and complete 5 comments on your metacognitive reading bookmark. You must comment once on each vignette.
